Ethos Gallery is honored to present internationally acclaimed sculptor Robert Holmes
The sculptures of ROBERT HOLMES achieve a striking synthesis of the abstract and the figurative. His works are handsome and forceful creations imbued with warmth, depth, and maturity. This sculptor finds an important place in the great tradition of the biomorphic abstraction of such masters as Jean Arp and Henry Moore. Holmes' work is often polymorphous, freezing in bronze the subtle dynamics of a timeless human expression. These works engage the viewer's imagination in an elaborate discourse with his inventive sculptural creations. Robert Holmes' all too rare achievement is that of distilling the human form to its essential elements and capturing, within those essentials, postures of truly poetic feeling. Many of his castings are pensive forms, with their featureless faces, are subdued in gesture and enigmatic in appearance. Immobile and serene, they challenge us to fathom their mystery. Sparsely detailed and unadorned, they possess a Spartan beauty and visually commanding presence. Placed in passive poses, many of Holmes' figures, nevertheless, exude a remarkable dynamism, an almost kinetic quality, the product of a brilliant union between matter and archetypal expressions.
